Everyone has a style they prefer. Some like patterns and bright colors. Others like stark white walls. It's what makes us unique. One particular trend and preference is a minimalist approach to the home. Ultimately minimalism is the practice of keeping the design simple, clean, and less 'flashy'. It allows the homeowner to leave the home as a 'blank canvas' that can be altered fairly quickly with a change in furniture. Minimalism typically gives the homeowner the basics of comfort without the frill of nick-nacks and clutter. It doesn't have to mean you have white walls and white furniture. In fact some minimalist design is best with color contrast. Every once in a while you may see a white home or living space with a hint of black or some other color. Just little pops of items or furniture in the home that help keep the eye enticed. Some designs embrace materials, but keeps the list of variables to a minimum. For a Minimalist Kitchen for example you will typically find slab door and drawer fronts w/ little detailing in the countertop and backsplash. This doesn't mean the kitchen HAS to be white with white counters and white backsplash - although it's what you'll probably see when you google 'minimalist kitchen'. Some spaces can achieve the feel with an embrace to bold colors. The key to staying in tune with minimalist is to keep the 'clutter' low.
Some designers have gone as far as to say that man people when they consider a minimalistic approach to design are getting in touch with their 'mid-century modern' side. We consider both to be on the same spectrum because both Mid-Century Modern and Minimalism focus on clean lines and approach that keeps things 'simple'. DeLay Drafting & Design Solutions has certainly seen our fair share of clients and homeowners asking for a similar design. It's a trend that we think will see an 'uptick' in 2023. It might be time to speak to your contractor or contact us so you can be a trend setter and see just how awesome your home can look if you too went minimalist.
